988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

Dial 988 or 1-800-273-8255 for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

Longer-term Support
Mental health resources, such as therapies, medications, and rehabilitative services are available to you if you need them.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a free, confidential online behavioral health treatment services locator.

Mental Health America offers an online resource to help you identify the right treatment plan for your situation.

If you are looking for more information about a specific mental health condition or diagnosis, a helpful guide is available from the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) here.

Child and Teen Mental Health
Children and teens are also at risk of mental health crises and illnesses. For a young person with symptoms of a mental disorder, the earlier treatment is started, the more effective it can be. Early treatment can help prevent more severe, lasting problems as a child grows up.

*If you are concerned about a child or teen, a good starting point is the National Institute of Mental Health's page for Child and Adolescent Health and MentalHealth.gov's page for Parents and Caregivers, which includes symptoms and indicators of potential mental health issues.

*It can be difficult to support your child's mental health when you are struggling yourself. HealthyChildren.org offers some tips for how to care for yourself and the young people in your life during challenging times.

*Consider bringing suicide prevention and mental health awareness training to your child's school.

Remember, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and other hotlines included at the beginning of this page are available for people of any age, and can be helpful to parents or caregivers worried about a child.
